Sandy Spring Friends School 5

Sandy Spring Friends School is a progressive, coed, college preparatory Quaker school serving students from preschool age 3 through 12th Grade, with an optional boarding program in the Upper School. Founded in 1961, SSFS offers a deep and rigorous academic curriculum, character education rooted in universal Quaker principles, and a diverse and international student body that reflects today's global community. SSFS sits on a pastoral 140-acre campus in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland, midway between Washington D.C. and Baltimore - an ideal setting for intellectual contemplation, athletic training, diverse extracurricular pursuits, outdoor exploration, urban excursion, and personal growth.

Our School is located in Sandy Spring, Maryland, in Montgomery County, about 17 miles from the White House and 20 miles west of Baltimore. Sandy Spring Friends School is on an amazing 140-acre park-like property that includes a swimming pond, an old-growth forest, streams, two solar arrays, and even an aerial park. We have approximately 600 students in preschool (age 3) through 12th grade, and 160 faculty and staff. While most students live in the neighborhood or have a short commute, our Upper School (9th-12th grades) also includes a boarding option (both five-day and seven-day) for about 80 students, including a robust international community.

Sandy Spring Friends School recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It has always been and remains a close-knit community: innovative, diverse, proud of its Quaker heritage, and welcoming to all.

  1. I’m not sure there’s a more beautiful setting for a school in Montgomery County. SSFS has passionate teachers who care about student outcomes as much as students as young people.

The leadership group is up and down as far as expertise in certain areas. Some of the administrators don’t seem to know what’s going on all the time. This can be very frustrating.

I wish the diversity of the student body was a little bigger so students would find it easier to make friends in late middle/early high school.
