    Mission/Philosophy
Nature, movement, the arts, and foreign language—so commonly lacking in the school experience—are a priority for our cooperative. Though the pursuit of rigorous academics is rightly given its due attention, the importance of developing a lifelong love of learning is always kept at the forefront of our minds. Through field trips and outdoor exploration, children make connections to their daily program of studies, and their theme-based classwork is enriched by experiences such as a day at the National Gallery of Art, a visit to Mount Vernon, or a simple hike in the forest next to our school. In order to make time for academics, multiple outdoor and movement periods, field trips, and the arts, our school meets Monday through Friday, six hours a day. Our students take the Terra Nova – a standardized, nationally normed exam – at the end of each school year. Typically they score well above grade level in each subject area.

Important Q&A

What differentiates your school from all others?
We believe that learning should be dynamic, organic, and integrative. Wherever possible, The River Farm curriculum seeks to integrate subject matters and allow for student-directed learning. To do so, River Farm draws upon an eclectic curriculum that supports the development of lifelong learners. The instructional premise pulls concepts from various educational theories and schools of thought. Children are unique, and there is no “one size fits all” approach in our learning model.
