  • What differentiates your school from all others?

The "&" in Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences serves as a symbol of what we value. It represents the cross-curricular nature of our teaching. It represents partnerships with local art, science, and educational organizations that bring classroom concepts to life through engaging field studies. It represents the many and varied opportunities for personal growth that a Barnesville education offers students beyond academics, such as the Buddy program, sports teams, visual and performing arts, and community service.

The "&" also represents the personal connections that are the true power of our community -- the close relationships teachers are able to make with each and every student, the lasting friendships students develop with one another across grade-levels, and the bonds families make as our children grow up together.

The "&" symbolizes the opportunities Barnesville offers students to IMAGINE, EXPLORE, GROW, & ACHIEVE.

  • Whats one myth about your school thats just not true?

A lot of people do not know where Barnesville is. We occupy a beautiful 30-acre campus on rolling country hills just 15 minutes from Germantown and Frederick. It is a point of pride for us that Barnesville is the only accredited independent school in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. This location is an ideal place for students to learn and play inside and outside the classroom, and offers daily opportunities to explore the natural world and develop a respect for the environment. In addition, we are a Maryland Green School certified by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. We seek to maintain our roots in rural tradition by involving our students both in our local community and the great outdoors.

We offer bus service from the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg, Clarksburg, Urbana, and Frederick.

  • What kind of student is most successful at your school?

Being a student at Barnesville means being part of our unique and close-knit community. The School's mission of joy, support, and excellence cultivates an atmosphere of mutual respect where students encourage and inspire each other and gain confidence in the value of their own unique voice. Barnesville students are joyful learners who imagine, explore, grow, and achieve.

  • Why should we choose your school?

We believe childhood should be a time for students to explore the world around them, try different things, and imagine the possibilities. That is why Barnesville offers opportunities, not choices. Students shouldn’t have to choose art or science, theater or sports, technology or nature, achievement or joy. It’s the “&” that makes Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences far from standard. We invite you to visit to learn what the “&” could mean for your child.

I pulled my son from Montgomery County Public Schools after 1 and a half years at a “Blue Ribbon” school, when I found he was not challenged enough. Barnesville School has small classrooms, where teachers know each student, and tailor lessons to them and their learning style. My son is in a 4th grade class with just 9 students and loves all the individual attention he receives!

The school’s motto is Joy. Support. Excellence. and I find that they exceed my expectations in all three areas. The children are happy to come to school every day (unlike at his prior school), the staff offer fantastic support to each student, and the children excel, so that they may get into practically any high school when they graduate. The location in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve is unique and beautiful; the kids get to go outdoors every day, and school projects take advantage of their unique campus.

Finally, the bus service is fantastic, my son gets dropped off at our home every day, a huge convenience.

I cannot speak highly enough about the school. I consider it to be the best kept secret in Maryland.

We were drawn to the Barnesville School initially through a ‘gut feeling’ stepping onto campus which promotes Joy, Support and Excellence for each child….our son has lived this for the last four years. He continues to thrive from the investments made by combining arts & humanities, math & science, nature & technology.

The teachers encourage him to take risks in a protected environment, so that he can be challenged to grow academically and socially, while exploring at the same time. We feel confident that he will be more than prepared for high school.
