St. Albans School

For more than one hundred years, St. Albans School has educated boys well. Here, boys learn to solve differential equations, construct castles and catapults, parse Chinese poetry and Latin history, reenact a scene from Shakespeare, and reargue a historic debate. They race underwater robots in the swimming pool and send lab experiments into outer space. They learn how to think and read critically and to write clearly.

Many boys come to St. Albans School because of the school’s rigorous college-preparatory program. They graduate, I hope, with something more. The long view, for our boys, involves the pursuit of wisdom and of a demanding and satisfying life, preferably dedicated to the service of others.

As an Episcopal school standing beside Washington National Cathedral, St. Albans places great emphasis upon boys’ moral and spiritual education. Our community welcomes faculty and students from all faiths and backgrounds. We encourage boys to find their strengths in many spheres: sports and arts are not extracurricular activities here; they are essential elements of our course of study.

    From the top of Mount St. Alban, St. Albans School looks up to the Washington National Cathedral and out to the United States Capitol. Our location serves as an embodiment and constant reminder of the School’s motto: Pro Ecclesia et Pro Patria, for Church and Country. Since the School was established in 1909 by the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, our mission has been to prepare boys to develop and use their spiritual, intellectual, artistic, and physical gifts not for themselves alone, but in service of the greater community. As an Episcopal School, we welcome and embrace boys of all faiths and backgrounds to this caring community that learns, prays, plays, sings, and eats together. We are committed to a diversity among students, faculty, and staff that shapes and enriches our shared experiences. We know and value each boy and over the past century have helped boys to grow into public servants, leaders in all fields, and citizens who live the community ideal long after they have left the School.
