Overlee Preschool seeks to provide a stimulating and happy environment that will help children learn to respect themselves; to respect the feelings, ideas, and rights of others; to make choices, resolve conflicts and solve problems; and to explore new ways of doing things… with the belief that this will help each child develop as a confident, whole individual.
Children learn, and retain what they learn, through play. Overlee believes that children develop best by making their own choices within the limits of an established schedule and in a play-based environment.
Free Play is a major ingredient of the Overlee day. In free play, children have the opportunity to explore Overlee’s stimulating environment. They learn to make choices, solve problems, resolve conflicts, interact with peers, share, cope with frustrations, verbalize, and develop self-control.
Directed Activities at Overlee include exploration of topics that interest children such as nature, animals, holidays, transportation, and community helpers. Teachers coordinate finger plays, songs, stories, art projects and sometimes field trips to highlight these themes.
Art and Music: Exposure to many mediums and techniques of art and music is part of the daily program.
Table Activities and Circle Time: Group times to encourage cooperation and to provide a time to introduce new concepts and skills.
Stories and Snacks: A time for stories and snack allows the child to replenish physical and mental energies.
Outdoor Play: Vigorous outdoor activity on Overlee’s playground develops and strengthens physical skills and self-confidence.
Field Trips: Field trips offer children a chance to learn through experience. Our destinations might include a pumpkin patch, local high school career center, nature center, and middle school orchestra class.
Class Enrichment: In-class visits from fire-fighters, dentists, naturalists and others also help to broaden our children’s learning opportunity. Overlee offers enrichment sessions on a regular basis in science, yoga, music and movement.
