I’m not that parent who pretends to be gluten free for attention. But I do think diet is very important. There’s a lot of research behind it and I wish schools would make it a priority.

Which schools in the area make the health of their snacks and lunch offerings a priority?

Progressive schools and ones with more liberal parents seem to be trending in that direction. Also smaller schools have it easier. It takes a lot to change the cultural menu at top DC area schools.

Our child’s school has organic offerings on a large daily menu, but there’s still sugary milk and empty calories galore.

The other problem that we’ve heard is kids don’t like it. If the Monday organic only menu only attracts 5% of kids ordering it it’s just not worth it.

    The time will come though…
